Home Maintenance Tips | February 2025

Winter is still in full swing, but February is the perfect time to tackle a few key home maintenance tasks to keep your home in top shape. From checking for roof damage to prepping for spring moss treatment, a little effort now can help prevent bigger (and more expensive) issues down the road. Here are 10 essential tasks to help PNW homeowners stay ahead of the game this month!

  1. Clean and Inspect Gutters

Winter storms leave behind debris that can clog your gutters, leading to water damage. Clear out leaves, pine needles, and moss buildup to ensure proper drainage before heavy spring rains arrive.

2. Check for Roof Damage

High winds, rain, and snow can loosen or damage shingles. Inspect your roof (from the ground or with binoculars) for missing or lifted shingles and schedule repairs to prevent leaks.

3. Plan for Moss and Algae Prevention

Moss thrives in the damp PNW climate, especially on shaded roofs, driveways, and decks. While February is often too cold and wet for treatments to be fully effective, you can start preparing by:

  • Gently brushing off moss from surfaces like wooden decks or walkways (avoid pressure washing in cold temps).

  • Clearing debris from shaded areas to reduce moisture retention.

  • Scheduling a treatment for early spring when temperatures rise.

4. Inspect Windows and Doors for Drafts

Cold air seeping in through small gaps can drive up heating costs. Check for drafts around windows and doors, replace worn-out weather stripping, and use caulk to seal any gaps.

5. Test Your Sump Pump

If your home has a basement or crawlspace, ensure your sump pump is in working order before spring rainfall increases. Pour a bucket of water into the pit to confirm it activates properly.

6. Trim Overgrown Trees and Branches

Heavy rain and wind can weaken branches, making them a hazard to your home, vehicles, and power lines. Trim back any overhanging limbs before late winter storms.

7. Clean Dryer Vents

Excess lint in your dryer vent poses a fire risk, especially in damp conditions. Detach the vent hose and vacuum out any buildup to improve efficiency and reduce fire hazards.

8. Inspect and Flush Your Water Heater

Sediment buildup in your water heater reduces efficiency. If you haven’t flushed it in the past year, now is a good time to do a partial flush to remove debris and extend its lifespan.

9. Deep Clean and Inspect Your Basement or Crawlspace

Moisture can accumulate in basements and crawlspaces during winter, leading to mold and mildew growth. Check for any damp areas, leaks, or musty smells, and take steps to improve ventilation or use a dehumidifier if needed.

10. Check and Reset Outdoor Lighting

Sediment buildup in your water heater reduces efficiency. If you haven’t flushed it in the past year, now is a good time to do a partial flush to remove debris and extend its lifespan.
